Flight Control Law
Reversion Map

You're looking at a preview. The full 2-page reference map covers every rung of the law ladder — Normal through Mechanical Back-up — built from FCOM doctrine for pilots who need to know exactly what they have left when the net starts disappearing.

The Golden Rule · Map Principle #1

"Fly the airplane first. Confirm the actual law and protection state second."

Every rung of the ladder is a subtraction from Normal Law. This map tracks what you keep, what you lose, and what replaces it — in the order the aircraft actually degrades.

The Law Ladder — Four Rungs Down

The pitch law descends this path. It is not always linear — roll often goes Direct earlier, yaw can degrade independently. Law names shown here. Full protection states, flying technique, and degradation triggers are in the complete map.

① Normal Law Full Protection Envelope

The complete protection net. Your reference baseline. Everything below is a subtraction from this picture.

② Alternate Law Reduced Protection

The most common degraded state. Some protections remain as aids — overrideable, not walls. Roll goes Direct immediately. Full keep/lose breakdown in the map.

③ Direct Law No Protections

Direct stick-to-surface. Autotrim off. You are the protection. Stall and overspeed warnings still work — respect them. Full flying technique in the map.

④ Mechanical Back-up Continuation Architecture

Pitch via manual THS trim. Lateral via rudder pedals only. Mindset: stabilize, stay upright, recover a FBW law if able.

What You Keep. What You Lose.

Alternate Law is the most commercially important rung — the one most pilots enter during a check ride and the one most misunderstood on the line. Protection names shown here. The full map includes Alternate without reduced protection (2b), the Abnormal Attitude Law trigger, and the complete protection grid across all five law states.

You Keep
+Load-factor limitation
+Low-speed stability aid (~5-10 kt above stall warning)
+High-speed stability aid above VMO/MMO
+Stall and overspeed warnings
+Autotrim
You Lose
High-AOA protection and alpha-floor
Pitch-attitude protection
Bank-angle protection (roll is now Direct)
High-speed protection
Pitch goes Direct (flare mode) at gear down in most cases

* Speed-stability aids are overrideable — they are cues, not hard limits. The full map covers Alternate without reduced protection (2b) and when each applies.
